Thank you for everything—our beloved king of sailing
It is with great sadness that the Hankø Yacht Club (HYC) has received the news that our beloved honorary member, His Majesty King Harald V, has passed away.
Throughout his long life, King Harald showed an extraordinary love for sports in general and sailing in particular. For HYC, the royal family’s presence and participation have always been a source of joy. During the King’s visit to HYC this summer, we experienced his interest in the club, as well as his warmth and good humor.
King Harald V was an outstanding sailor and athlete with impressive achievements both nationally and internationally. He inherited his love of sailing from King Olav V, who was also an active member of the HYC. On the course, he was not only a competitor, but also a very good one. He promoted fair play and knew the rules of sailing. King Harald both sailed and organized regattas. His achievements are numerous; King Harald competed in three Olympic Games and won World and European Championship medals in several boat classes. He sailed his final World Championship regatta in 2022 aboard the 8-meter yacht Sira, which he inherited from his father.
We hope and believe that the club became a haven for the King, where he could participate as an athlete on the regatta course, enjoy life on the docks with his crew and sailing friends, and lift everyone’s spirits with his good humor.
When the royal biography of King Harald V is written, it will tell the story of a king who not only gave his all for Norway, but also contributed greatly to the sport of sailing. We remember King Harald with gratitude—as a person, for his love of sailing, his integrity, and his significance to Norway and the Norwegian people.
Our warmest thoughts and deepest sympathy go out to Queen Sonja, His Majesty King Haakon VIII, and the royal family.
